Krishna Janmashtami: significance & importance
Every year lord Krishna’s birth is celebrated as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami on krishna paksha ashtami tithi and Rohini nakshatra of Hindu month Bhadrapada. In 2021, we will celebrate the 5428th birth anniversary of Shree Krishna on 30 August.
Shree Krishna is the 8th incarnation of lord Vishnu, who came on the earth in Dwapar Yuga to establish the correct vision of Dharma by exterminating the powerful evils (adharmi) like Kansa. To reunite India as Akhand Bharat and establish peace he guided Pandavas in the great war of Mahabharata in Kurukshetra. He also teaches us the lesson of humanity and selfless service, which is compiled in the world famous sacred book “Geeta ‘’. All the incidents of his life and his teachings are mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, Shrimad Bhagwat Puran, Vishnu Puran, Geeta and Harivansh Puran.
Shree Krishna was born at midnight, as the eighth child to Devaki and Vasudev in the prison of Kansa, who was his maternal uncle and king of Mathura. The newly born shree Krishn (Bal Gopal) was transferred to a small village named Gokul at Nand baba and Yashoda home with divine guidance of Maa Yogmaya.
